‘Sexting’ a Favorite Among Tweens
Sexting. It’s all the rage, especially among our middle school kids.
Sexting takes place with a cell phone. Kids take naked pictures of themselves and then send then to their friends, who then forward them on to everyone they know. It may sound far-fetched but, chances are, it’s happening at a middle school near you.
The problem is especially prevalent in middle America. Recently, reporters for a local television station in Arkansas found several 8th graders who said they regularly send and receive nude pictures on their cell phones.
It’s a show-off game, they say. The boys send pictures of their private parts in an effort to really show how “big” they are. Girls apparently do the same with their chests.
Kids think this type of behavior is all fun and games but in reality it is child pornography and it’s illegal. A 15-year-old girl in Ohio is facing felony charges and may have to register as a sex offender after allegedly sending naked pictures of herself from her cell phone. The same goes for a 17-year-old boy in Wisconsin and a 16-year-old boy in Utah.
The problem is that police can’t crackdown on this because they need a warrant to search a cell phone. Parents, here’s where you step in.
I’ve said this repeatedly, but I’ll say it again. Parents need to know what their kids are up to at all times. That includes knowing what they are doing on their cell phones. A quick look at their send/receive history will give you immediate answers- good or bad.
Some people may argue that sexting is harmless and, perhaps, a form of safe sex. I would agree if 18-year-olds were doing it. We’re talking about 12 and 13-year-olds. That’s too young to start toying around with sex. When I was 12, I wouldn’t have dreamed about sending a naked picture of myself to a boy. But times have changed I guess.
Parents, it’s time we change too.

IF YOU DON'T GIVE IN, THEN HE MAY RESORT TO SLIPPING YOU A DRUG TO GET YOU TO HAVE SEX. MANY YOUTH, AND EVEN ADULTS HAVE BEEN SLIPPED "MICKIES" IN THEIR DRINKS. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE HARD LIQUOR. IT CAN BE A SOFT DRINK. YOU MUST BE AWARE OF THE TRICKS THAT GUYS USE TO GET WHAT THEY WANT. IF YOUR DATE GOES TO GET YOU A SOFT DRINK, OR IF YOU HAVE TO USE THE RESTROOM AND LEAVE THE TABLE WHERE YOUR DRINK IS SITTING, BE AWARE OF POSSIBILITIES OF SPIKED DRINKS. IF YOU'RE AT AT PARTY, AVOID PUNCH BOWL, OR COMMUNITY DRINKING AREAS WHERE SOMEONE CAN SLIP AN ODORLESS, TASTELESS DRUG. Teenager's are having oral sex people! Not necessarily all of them, but a large majority of them are.
More than half of 15- to 19-year-olds are doing it, according to a groundbreaking study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The researchers did not ask about the circumstances in which oral sex occurred, but the report does provide the first federal data that offer a peek into the sex lives of American teenagers.
To adults, "oral sex is extremely intimate, and to some of these young people, apparently it isn't as much," says Sarah Brown, director of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.
"What we're learning here is that adolescents are redefining what is intimate."
Among teens, oral sex is often viewed so casually that it needn't even occur within the confines of a relationship. Some teens say it can take place at parties, possibly with multiple partners. But they say the more likely scenario is oral sex within an existing relationship.
Still, some experts are increasingly worrying that a generation that approaches intimate behavior so casually might have difficulty forming healthy intimate relationships later on.
Now that some kids are using oral sex as something that's more casual, it's shocking to (parents).
The brain is wired to develop intense physical and emotional attraction during the teenage years as part of the maturing process. But he's disturbed by the casual way sex is often portrayed in the media, which he says gives teens a distorted view of true intimacy.
Casual Attitude
Oral sex used to be considered "exotic." After the sexual revolution of the 1960s, it was viewed as a more intimate sexual act than sexual intercourse, but now, in young people's minds, it's "a more casual act." I've heard kids talking about it like they were talking about what they had for lunch that day. No big deal is the attitude that I am seeing.
Beyond shock, many parents aren't sure what to think when they discover their children's nonchalant approach to oral sex.
"It doesn't cross your mind because it's not something you have done.. Most parents weren't doing this (as teenagers) in the way these kids are.
But if parents are looking for reasons to freak out, the health risk of oral sex apparently isn't one of them. Teenagers and experts agree that oral sex is less risky than intercourse because there's no threat of pregnancy and less chance of contracting a sexually transmitted disease or HIV. I wouldn't want my kids to have any type of sex, but I'm not stupid either.
Talk is crucial
Experts say parents need to talk to their kids about sex sooner rather than later. I've been saying this all along. Oral sex needs to be part of the discussion because these teens are growing up in a far more sexually open society.
Reports for years have focused on teens "hooking up" casually. Depending on the group, teens say it can mean kissing, making out or having sex.
"Friends with benefits" is another way of referring to non-dating relationships, with a form of sex as a "benefit."
But not all teens treat sex so casually, Parents don't hear enough about teen relationships where there is a lot of emotional involvement.
They hear about teens going to the parties and having lots and lots of sex. It happens, but it's not something that happens all the time. It's more of an extreme behavior.
Listen to your kids, not just face to face, but listen to their conversation's with their friends if you can. If you do find out that they are sexually active, then talk with them and supply them with the nessesities if nessessary. Yes folks, I AM talking about protection. Explain to them that you are not giving them the ok to have sex, but that if they choose to do so they will be better protected. Realistacly teen's are going to have sex. Will they be smart enough to use protection? Probably not. If you are communicating at this level with your child in where you can talk about sex and protection, then you will probably have a better chance at not having a teen pregnancy or a STD in your family.
I had a child at 15 years of age. I put her up for adoption and met her when she turned 18, she is 23 now and wonderful! My parent's didn't really communicate to me about sex. I was affraid to talk to them about getting on birth control because I was sexually active, so yes, I ended up pregnant. Yes, they taught me the "birds and bee's" basic's, but never about the "real world" and sex. I wouldn't want any other teenager to go through what I went through as a pregnant teenager. It was one of the hardest thing's that I ever had to do in my life. So yes, I have some realistic view's on this topic.
